Abstract

Aim: This cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the relationship between maternal attachment and postpartum depression and the affecting factors. Method: 132 Women who applying to Family Health Centers constitute the population of the study. Personal Information Form, Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale and Maternal Attachment scale were used to collect data. The data were evaluated in SPSS by using frequency, mean, t-test, Anova and correlation analysis. Results: The results obtained from this study showed that there was a negative and highly significant relationship between postpartum depression and maternal attachment(p<0.05). In the statistical analysis, a significant difference was found between the women's depression risk and maternal attachment score averages according to where they live, education status, social security status, income status, desire to become pregnant, and whether the spouse helps with baby care (p<0.05). Conclusion: A mother experiencing postpartum depression may have difficulties bonding with her baby. Therefore, it is important to know the factors related to maternal behavior in the early postpartum period and to determine the needs of mothers. Psychiatric help and counseling services should be provided to women who show depressive symptoms during pregnancy in order to provide them with coping skills.
